Chimp Funeralby J-Touchette
A female chimpanzee named Dorothy died of congestive heart failure on September 23, 2008. She was in her late 40s. Dorothy’s death is unique because the former amusement park chimp was mourned by her fellow chimps in a very human fashion.
She was staying at Cameroon’s Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center where she served as a mother figure to other chimps. As her body was brought out to her grave site, the other chimps gathered to watch the process. They stood in uncharacteristic silence with supportive hands laid on each others’ shoulders.
