Michael Jackson was buried on September 3, 2009 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles. He was interred in Forest Lawn's Great Mausoleum, in a crypt in the Holly Terrace section.

People around the world were shocked when they heard about Michael Jackson’s unexpected death on June 25th 2009. Lost due to cardiac arrest from an accidental prescription drug overdose, the wave of grief that consumed the world was astounding.

Jackson’s concert organizer, AEG Live, held a memorial service for Jackson that took place on July 7, 2009. The memorial service was held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, and AEG gave away 17,500 free tickets to the memorial procession even though only 1,000 of the ticket holders showed up.

$1.4 million dollars were spent on security for the event by the city of Los Angeles – that’s not including AEG Live’s costs to run the whole memorial service. The service was broadcasted live on television and on the internet, and is rumored to have had an audience of about a billion people. The service included Jackson’s family, famous musicians, actors, athletes, political figures, and reverends who all came to pay tribute to Jackson in the form of song, prayer and speech. Jackson’s family paid tribute to him by wearing a white sequinned glove on one hand- a signature look of Jackson’s.

Jackson’s closed casket was bronze, with 14 karat gold trimming and a blue velvet lining. The coffin was not expected to be at the memorial service, and afterwards there was another surprise: the family made the trek from the Staples Center to the Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery, and his remains are interred at the very private Great Mausoleum.
