Memorials on Facebook can give friends, family and well-wishers world wide the opportunity to pass on condolences when someone passes.

The power of social media in the funeral industry is immense. It gives everyone the ability to communicate their emotions during a difficult time, and helps people to better organize events like funerals.

On Thursday, May 26, 2011 an explosion at an Ottawa, Ontario high school caused the death of Eric Leighton, and the response from the public was immediate.

A Facebook event to memorialize him was created the same day as the explosion, and within 24 hours over 11,000 people had marked attending. Even if all the students at his school had joined, it would have been a group of around 1,500 people, but complete strangers showed their sympathy by joining in droves.
