Preparing for Death

by MSO

The Bible teaches that the anointing of the sick with oil and prayer by the priests of the Church may obtain forgiveness of sins and even refreshment of body.

In the Catholic religion, the Last Rites are more commonly referred to as the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, or Extreme Unction. While currently used more often with those on their deathbed, the rite can be used to treat any major illness. To use the rite, confession must first take place, which is why the rite became used primarily for those on their deathbed, since confession must take place then as well. Extreme Unction is used to heal a person, body and soul, although healing of the soul is more prominent. It came about when Jesus would ask his disciples to heal the sick whenever it was reasonably possible.
