Francois Vatel – Perfectionist to the End

It's said a chef can't hide behind the kitchen door which kind of limits their options when things go wrong.

Francois Vatel was a French Chef who lived in the mid 1600s, employed at the Chateau de Chantilly. He was preparing for a large banquet to be held in honor of Louis XIV when he allegedly ran himself through with his sword.

Always a perfectionist, Vatel had worked himself into a fury to prepare for the banquet when an assistant delivering his fish brought only a small amount. Terrified at being seen as a dishonorable failure at the lack of fish he killed himself. Some versions of the story state that the fish began arriving shortly after his death.
