Hats off to Isabella

Isabella Blow, A Life in Fashion by Lauren Goldstein Crowe is now available in bookstores everywhere.

Isabella Blow was a fashion icon and known for her extravagant hats. She died on May 6, 2007 at the age of 48.

She was close friends with many key figures in the fashion world including Philip Treacy, Alexander McQueen, Sheikh Majed, Ronnie Newhouse and Nadja Swarovski.

She lived a life of extremes. She bought all of Alexander McQueen’s degree show, and had Philip Treacy design her wedding hat when she married Detmar Blow in 1988.

She always worked somewhere in the fashion industry, as Anna Wintour’s assistant on American Vogue, then for Michael Roberts at Tatler, for British Vogue, The Sunday Times, and ultimately she returned to Tatler as fashion director.

Part of the reason Isabella would always wear these grand hats was because she was convinced she was ugly, and so she tried to hide her face. These hats were so varied, that Treacy had an entire exhibition of only hats designed for Isabella.

She took her life by ingesting weedkiller, it was her third attempt at suicide. Her funeral was held in The Guards Chapel. where she was married, and much of the fashion world showed up to pay respects in suitably couture attire. However, none of the guests could match Isabella’s hat. Placed on top of her casket, the icon had a hat, again designed by Treacy, sporting a black sailing ship atop it.
