Sheared Shrek Sheep Sleeps

by J-Touchette

A professional shearer can shear a sheep in less than 2 minutes and will remove the fleece in one piece.

The name Shrek will probably evoke the image of an animated ogre and donkey due to the hit Hollywood franchise. But New Zealand isn’t mourning an ogre. This famous sheep had to be put down on June 6 due age-related illness.

The marino became a sensation in his home country by hiding in caves at sheep shearing time for six straight years. After his capture the 16 year old animal had his 60 lb fleece, enough to make 20 large men’s suits, cut off. The event was for charity and raised $150,000 for research into life-threatening illnesses.

Shrek had quite the career once captured. He met then Prime Minister Helen Clark, was a character in children’s books, and regularly appeared at charity events. When he passed on, the nation mourned.

But a memorial service is in the works. Also, Shrek is being considered for taxidermy and his owner is also putting a bronze statue of the sheep in Shrek’s town. Shrek also has a Facebook memorial page.
