Brothers in Arms, Brothers in Dresses

Black may be the color for traditional funeral wear but this man had an unusual request from his best friend.

When most people think of funeral attire they think black. Not this guy. Barry Delaney kept a promise to his best friend Kevin Elliot, that when one of them died the other would wear a pink and green polka dot dress.

Kevin Elliot a Black Watch soldier was killed on August 31, 2009 in Afghanistan while on foot patrol in the southern province of Helmand. Delany couldn’t find a dress like the one they had discussed, so he wore a bright green dress and pink leg warmers to honor the pact.

Private Elliot’s other friends and family wore Black Watch tartan ribbon pins with the words Kevin Elliot Our Hero and T-shirts with his photo on them. His army colleagues wore their regimental uniforms and carried his coffin, which was draped in a saltire. Hundreds of mourners lined the route outside St. Mary’s church in the city center, and clapped as the funeral cort√ãge left for the cemetery. It is said that Delaney told other mourners ahead of time about the outfit he was going to wear.
