He Expanded Our Tech Horizons One Apple Byte At A Time

"Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the ones who think differently. While some may see crazy, we see genius." Steve Jobs 1955, 2011

In 1976 Steve Jobs sold his Volkswagen minibus and his friend Steve Wozniak sold his HP scientific calculator to raise funds that would allow them to build the first Apple computer. They collected $1750 and began work in Wozniak’s parents’ garage on Apple I. That year they founded Apple Computer Inc. and a year later they built Apple II which now forms the backbone of all Mac computers. They recorded sales of $139 million from 1977 to 1979. In 1980 Apple went public with the initial share price of $2.75 – today those shares are worth almost $400.00.

Not wanting to solely be known as one computer company in a sea of many, Jobs built Apple into the iconic electronics giant it is today. From the day Jobs pulled the first iPod out of his jeans at the Apple Music Event in 2001, he showed he world the future of electronics was and is smaller, faster and loaded with innovation. One hundred million iPhones, 275 million iPods, 25 million iPads have been sold worldwide so far. Add to that the 11.7 billion songs that have been downloaded from iTunes and the 6.5 billion apps that have been downloaded, and you will see how one man’s vision has made the world think differently.

After fighting the cancer that first took hold of him in 2004, Steve Jobs sent a letter to Apple employees on August 24, 2011 that stated, “I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.” Steve Jobs passed away on October 5, 2011, he was 56 years old. He is survived by his wife Laurene, their three children and a fourth child from a previous relationship.

“Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.” – www.apple.com
